The Medical Missionaries of Divine Mercy began in 2002 with the vision of our founder, Cordell St. Cyr. He, along with a few other St. Laurence parishioners, put their time and resources together and headed off to Tamasopo, Mexico with a group of approximately 25 volunteers. The Mexico mission trips continued until 2008 at which time the diocese deemed it unsafe to travel to this area. MMDM's Board of Directors decided to move our mission just slightly to the north of the border, to Laredo, Texas. Since 2009, in conjunction with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Laredo, MMDM has provided dental, medical, vision, chiropractic and most importantly spiritual services to an average of 800 patients each year. Our brothers and sisters in Laredo anticipate our yearly visit and begin lining up for services early on Monday morning.
In 2014, MMDM's Board of Directors approved a second mission trip to Costa Rica. A planning team traveled to Grano de Oro, Costa Rica to plot out the details of our services. In early May 2014, with the help of the local Health Ministry, over 30 medical, dental, vision, chiropractic, spiritual and lay team members left St. Laurence parish and headed to Grano de Oro to provide services to the local Costa Ricans as well as to the indigenous Cabecar Indians who live in the surrounding reserves. The Cabecars travel many days either by foot or on horseback to receive the needed services MMDM provides. MMDM has provided services to over 24,000 patients, in 3 countries since we began. We continue with the two mission trips: Laredo in the Fall and Costa Rica in the Spring, and we are embarking in a new Mission to Philippines in February 2023. We entrust all we do and all we have to the Mercy of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
