The Medical Missionaries of Divine Mercy (MMDM) from Saint Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land in cooperation with The Diocese of Laredo go on mission to Laredo, Texas. Our Mission center is at San Luis Rey Parish. We do the Corporal and Spiritual works of mercy, serving approximately 1100 -1200 patients: The poor and disadvantaged, with free medical, dental, vision, audiology, chiropractic and physical therapy and spiritual and healing services. The mission services are provided Monday – Friday at San Luis Rey Parish. The Team Size The MMDM traveling team will usually be about 45- 50 healthcare professionals with multiple volunteers in other capacities. All together MMDM mission and Laredo CSS partners total about 75 people during the mission week.
Travel to Laredo The trip to Laredo begins on Saturday, with Mass, instructions and a continental breakfast at St. Laurence Parish. Missionaries load luggage in trailers and board 15 passenger vans for the trip to Laredo approximately a five hour trip, including restroom/food breaks. Travel is included in your fee if you travel with the group. Otherwise travel is on your own.
Housing in Laredo We stay as a group at La Posada Hotel. The hotel has a full dining area plus meeting rooms. Missionaries stay two to a room. Married couples have their own room. The hotel is a five minute drive from San Luis Rey church, our home base for the mission.
Food Service All meals are included in your Fee. Breakfast buffet and dinner are prepared and served by the La Posada staff. Menus vary but always include a full salad bar at dinner. Lunch is served at all sites. Lunch, snacks, sodas and water are provided by donors at the mission site.
Weather in Laredo in November The high temperatures in Laredo are usually in the 80s with lows in the 50s. There's an average of 20% chance for rain. Weather is not much of a factor at this time of year in Laredo as nearly all work is done in air-conditioned facilities and transportation is in air-conditioned vans.
What to bring with you Pack light clothing suitable for a mission to people who are poor. Light shirts, scrubs, pants, light jacket or sweater, plus hat, umbrella comfortable shoes. Casual all the way is the mode of dress. Fanny pack for personal items and purse items and cell phones during mission day is a good choice. A nice outfit for the last night in Laredo as we gather to celebrate.
Insurance MMDM purchases all rental vehicle insurances and options as well as health insurance for missionaries while on the trip. The cost is included in the fee.
